Jangaru School

Jangaru School Project

One of the best things that can help the poor is education. Education can open the door to life-enriching opportunities. Although the adults in Jangaru have no formal education and are not literate, they value the possibilities for their children getting a basic education. Fund raising began in 2020 for a 3 room school in Jangaru. The school was completed and opened in January 2022. The number of children that arrived at opening day drastically exceeded our demographic survey of how many children we expected. Children were coming much farther than we expected for schooling. We were able to raise funds for a 2nd 3 room school and opened it, but the demand was still exceeded, and in early 2024 a 3rd 3 room school was opened. The school serves grades 1 - 8 and also preschool age-children. This allows mothers to drop young children off at the preschool and then go work in the fields more easily. The 3rd school building includes a basic wiring setup which allows for some adults to learn to read after dark with electricity provided from the well generator. We are now operating the 9 classrooms for 200 children. It should be noted that the school is open to Christians, Muslims and African Traditionalists. Each year we must raise funds for teacher salaries, books, school supplies, uniforms, sandals and whatever is needed to help the teachers and students succeed. Total costs for the 3 school buildings construction was approximately $100,000. Initial school startup costs for desks, chairs and miscellaneous 1-time purchases was approximately $15,000. Total operational cost of the Jangaru school system is approximately $20,000 annually.
