Jangaru Water Well Project

Jangaru Water Well

Jangaru Water Well Project

The Jangaru water well project, our first project in Jangaru (which was completed in 2019) was the implementation of a deep water well to provide year-round clean water for the Jangaru community. Water is life and Divine sustenance. Jangaru women and children are charged with water needs which meant long walks to a creek which cattle also use to get daily water. The lack of clean healthy water can cause a host of health problems and can be a component of early mortality in infants, children and adults. Because of seasonal dry and rainy periods, the drilling equipment could only get to Jangaru before the rainy season began. A well was drilled approximately 150 meters deep. This well allows for year-round clean water. The pump in the well is powered by an electric generator. Two 7000-liter storage tanks were installed to store water and gravity-feed the filling station which has 7 water filling spigots. Villagers fill their water containers at the spigots and carry them back to their homes. The number of people dependent on the Jangaru water system has swelled to over 2,000, with all the people in close proximity to Jangaru also coming to meet their daily water needs. Diminishing the efforts required just to meet the minimum sustenance needs for water frees up a lot of time and energy that can be better spent on other aspects of daily living. This well also shows the villagers that they are cared about and loved by the outside world. Complete cost of the water system in 2019 was approximately $8,000.
